Introduction 👋
I am Danielle Hughes, my pronouns are she/her. I have been working in the creative field, my whole existence and my title is Chief Personality Officer of More Than Words Marketing. I think I was always artistic. In high school, I had an art teacher that really inspired me. When I got to school, I actually realized that I was a better writer than I was a designer, and I think back then I didn't really think of writing as a creative pursuit like I do now, because I was doing a different kind of writing.
Career Paths ✏️
And when you do marketing writing, it's not necessarily seen as the most creative endeavor that you could pursue. But I think that I just always had a creative spirit, I would say that I have embraced the term creative maybe only recently, like maybe only in the past five years or so, as I've embarked on my own business and kind of realized what the word creative means to me. I spent most of my career in the corporate world, I actually never really had entrepreneurial endeavors or pursuits. You know, when I was growing up, the word entrepreneur was magazine, it wasn't something that people aspired to become. And so I ended up sort of becoming an accidental entrepreneur, when I got to a point where the corporate world just wasn't fulfilling me, it wasn't meeting the requirements of what I needed for my own happiness.
Road to Freelance ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ
And I went freelance, and I was a freelance copywriter for many years before pivoting again, because I realized that at some point, the work was starting to dry up. And I knew that if I wanted to take more control of my career, I needed to kind of figure out what I wanted to do and who I wanted to do it for. I mean, the person that I am today, and what I offer is night and day from where I started. And I think that that's for most people that you know, work in corporate America, or just work in this country for a very long time, you're eventually going to change everything.
Overcoming the Struggle (♡˙︶˙♡)
The way that I've kind of pushed through all this adversity of struggling and being concerned about how I'm going to pay the bills and how I'm going to keep a roof over my head and, you know, feed my family has just been like pure determination and hard work. But also connecting with like minded individuals who are there to help and support. The minute my business started to succeed is when I realized I needed to ask for help, and that I couldn't do everything on my own. And I think part of me being one of the older members of the Co, I do kind of feel like the mom sometimes where I get to impart the wisdom of my experience onto everyone else and we all bring some different things to the table.
Upcoming Projects 🌼
A project that I took on this year that is still sort of in the gestational phase, I suppose ( we've had a pilot and we're finalizing the details) is to go into a large organization and work with their employees on creating their own personality brand. I help people figure out how to put more of themselves into their message so that they feel comfortable, they can bring whatever level of themselves to work that makes sense for them and it allows them to showcase what they're good at and what makes them different.
I'm super excited to be able to do this within the confines of a corporate space, because even if you're an employee of an organization, you have your own special abilities that you bring to the table and a lot of people don't know how to articulate that to their teams or to their management. And so this is a way to help them learn what they're good at so they can advocate on their own behalf and hopefully get the projects that make sense for their skill set as opposed to just getting what comes their way.
